Our Tale

The Port Alberni Maritime Discovery Centre is owned and operated by the Port Alberni Maritime Heritage Society (a non-profit society). The Society conceived and developed the maritime museum in association with the Alberni Valley Museum and the Port Alberni Port Authority. Construction was completed in 2001. Each summer season a new exhibit on a maritime theme is presented at the centre along with special events and activities.

The Port Alberni Maritime Heritage Society was formed in 1989 with the purpose of working with the museum and the community to preserve and present the maritime heritage of the west coast area. The Society has developed and hosted temporary exhibits and coordinated many special events and has restored the Banfield Lifeboat.
